A Study on the Infant Feeding and Weaning Practice in Suwon

Abstract
Feeding method and weaning practice of 200 infants(boys 102, girls 98) from 4 to 12 months of age in Suwon, was studied. Data were obtained by interviewing mothers. The incidence of breast-feeding before 4 months of age was 42.5% of the infants, while 51.5% of them were bottle-feeding, and 29.3%. mixed-feeding. Sex, family income, and maternal job affected the feeding methods(p<0.05). Boys were bottle-fed, and girls were breast fed. The rate of breast feeding was lower in working mothers than housewives. Mothers who had a higher income tended to prefer the bottle-feeding. There was no significant differences in the feeding methods according to the mothers¡¯ age, educational level. and birth weight. The reason for bottle-feeding was mainly due to the lack of breast-milk secretion. Among the subjects, 79.9% of infants began to be weaned from 4 to 6 months. Infant feeding method affected the onset time of weaning(p<0.05). Breast-feeding infants began to supplement weaning food at 5 months of age, bottle-feeding infants began at 4 months of age. There was no significant differences in the onset time of weaning according to birth weight. mothers¡¯ age, maternal job, mothers¡¯ educational level and family income. 46.7% of infants received fruits juice for first given supplementary food.
